BOOK REVIEW

David M. Green

Diptera. Checklists of insects of the British Isles ( part 1). Handbooks for the identification of British insects 12(1) - edited Peter J. Chandler (published by Royal Entomological Society)

Not a bare check list - a source book on flies - and a summary of taxonomic progress. There are references (historical to present day), names and addresses of family specialists, annotations and notes giving explanation for changes and additions. There some useful pointers to latest keys to identification in English (and otherwise); most useful for a diverse and large order, where identification keys are scattered and become dated, but the situation is improving.

This is the first part of a new (sub)series, in pink apparently, that will update RES checklists published in the 1970s, that covered Britain only. The book has about four times the surface area of paper compared with the previous publication. A fungus gnat is on the cover, drawn by the author/editor who is a specialist on them, and who has made many additions to the list himself. Price about £14-£20.
