Worcestershire Record No. 17 November 2004 pp. 19-20
Rosemary Hill, Ron Boyce, Harry Green, Rosemary Winnall
Only four people were able to attend this meeting. Nevertheless we visited some interesting sites. It is quite hard to find slugs and snails in Wyre, the latter dependent on the infrequent areas of more calcareous rocks or soils, and the former are scarce in dry conditions. However it certainly rained on day one and a useful range of species were found. Leiostyla anglica was probably the most interesting find. This is a fairly small snail between 3-4 mm in diameter which has a mainly western oceanic distribution the Britain and Ireland. In central and southern England it is scarce and regarded as an indicator of ancient woodland which has never been cleared. It likes boggy hollows and moist ground litter (Kerney 1999). The specimens found in Wyre were in a very damp area amongst plant litter and stones.
The Conchological Society is planning to visit Bredon Hill 1st and 2nd October 2005. Non-member visitors are welcome of anyone is interested in attending please contact Harry Green. Its a great chance to learn from helpful experts.
