A SUMMARY OF NOTABLE EVENTS IN AUTUMN 2004
9th October 2004 Woodpigeon sat tight on her nest.
9th October 2004 First major influx of Redwings Turdus iliacus over Broadway, Worcs SP 098 378, heading rather curiously northwest.
10th October 2004 Redwing influx continued joined by Fieldfares Turdus pilaris. Fifty-plus had roosted overnight in a thicket, Broadway Village centre. Strong north-easterlies forced the Woodpigeon to abandon nest duties.
11th October 2004 Red Admiral on the wing in Broadway.
The last remaining summer residents began to encounter increasingly unsettled autumn weather and I was surprised by the numbers lingering in local villages.
12th October 2004 Small parties of Hirundines remained around the Gloucestershire villages of Didbrook, Wood Stanway and Stanton, plus three Swallows in Broadway, Worcestershire. Swallows easily outnumbered House Martins.
16th October 2004 Single Swallow pushing south over Broadway.
19th October 2004 Single Swallow flying frantically back and forth on a Broadway housing estate.
21st October 2004 Single Swallow battling southbound against strong southwest wind, 1.5kms north of Broadway at SP 099 395.
24th October 2004 Brimstone Butterfly on the wing at Broadway.
25th October 2004 Discovered a road-kill female Kingfisher at Bowers Hill, near Badsey, Worcestershire.
27th October 2004 Green Sandpiper? Heading east to northeast over Willersey, Gloucestershire at 08:30hrs.
