Our meetings are to help beginners learn their mosses and liverworts, rather than high-powered recording sessions. Please bring sandwiches to all outdoor meetings, which are on Sundays, starting at 10.30 am.
You may also wish to bring with you the new keys for the BBS Field-guide, which you can find on-line at www.hosting.sleath.co.uk/bbs (or click on the book cover of the Field-guide on the left-hand side of the BBS web-site’s home page).
You are very welcome to suggest venues for future outdoor meetings; please include grid references and details for parking.
December 2nd
Jonathan Sleath will meet us at Garway Hill, Herefordshire, parking at
SO439245. We will examine sandstone and flushes at the White Rocks on the
southern slope of the common on Garway Hill, before moving to a small Woodland
Trust reserve at The Jockies at SO 447294. This reserve has woodland,
grassland, flushes and some orchard trees.
January 20th
Ray Woods knows of a very fine block scree wood on the south side of Carngafallt
(SN 9463) to the east of Llanwrthwl in north-east Breconshire. Park in the
farmyard at Cwm (SN 954638), which you reach by leaving the A470 about 3 miles
south of Rhayader, and passing through the hamlet of Llanwrthwl.
February 10th
Sam Bosanquet will meet us at Croes Robert Wood SSSI, Monmouthshire.
There is limited parking by the roadside around SO 475059. The Old Red Sandstone
there has bands of impure limestone, with a little Neckera crispa.
Woodland nearby also has species such as Fissidens rivularis and Oxyrrhynchium
schleicheri, but is little known bryologically.
In the afternoon we might go on to Penallt Common (SO 518081), which has the only Carboniferous Limestone in the Welsh part of SO 50, and is quite unknown bryologically.
March 16th
Dan Wrench suggests that we meet by the lane at SO 415996 to explore Wilderley
Hill (SJ 423002) at the north end of the Long Mynd in mid-Shropshire, where
small Sphagnum lawns occur in mires, together with overhanging earth
banks, streams, etc. From there we could venture into open woodland and explore
streams at Long Rough (SJ 418008).
