NATIONAL MOTH NIGHT – 12TH
APRIL 2003
Rosemary
Winnall and Neil Gregory
National
Moth Night is an event organised by Atropos.
Many public moth trapping sessions are held around the country in addition to
people noting what comes to their garden or house lights. This year’s public
event for Worcestershire was held in Ribbesford Wood, near the Wyre Forest. It
was well attended, with a total of 5 light traps.
Unfortunately
the weather was not ideal, with temperatures falling to 7 degrees. 24 species of
moth were recorded, as well as some interesting woodlice and beetles. Brindled
Pug was the most numerous, with 62 seen in total. The moths seen were all
common, nevertheless they are useful records for a national snapshot.
I
thank the people who sent in their records for this year. Next year’s National
Moth Night will be held on 22nd May and I would like to encourage as
many people as possible to send in any moth records so I can forward them to the
national organisers.
